Bill Graham was one of the most influential figures in the history of rock and roll. As the promoter behind some of the most iconic concerts of all time, he played a major role in shaping the sound and style of popular music. Through his work with the Fillmore Auditorium and Winterland Ballroom, Graham helped to launch the careers of countless artists, including Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, and Bob Dylan.

Early Life

Bill Graham was born Wolfgang Grajonca in Berlin, Germany, on January 8, 1931. His parents were Polish Jews who had emigrated to Germany in the early 1900s. In 1954, Graham met Mort Sahl, a young comedian who was just starting out. Graham became Sahl's manager, and he helped to launch Sahl's career.

In 1965, Graham opened the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. The Fillmore quickly became one of the most popular venues in the country, and it hosted some of the most iconic concerts of the 1960s. In 1968, Graham opened Winterland Ballroom, which became another major venue for rock concerts.

Graham promoted some of the most famous concerts in history, including the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, Woodstock in 1969, and the Concert for Bangladesh in 1971. He also worked with some of the biggest names in rock and roll, including the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead, and Bob Dylan.
