Harry Truman: The Four Months That Changed the World
Harry S. Truman became the 33rd president of the United States on April 12, 1945, following the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He inherited a world at war and a nation on the brink of unprecedented technological change. The four months that followed were among the most consequential in American history.
The End of World War II
Truman's first major decision as president was to approve the use of atomic bombs against Japan. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively, brought about the end of World War II. The war had claimed the lives of millions of people around the world, and Truman's decision to use atomic weapons remains one of the most controversial in American history.
